IBM ThinkPad 760XD
This 'fat' model was in many ways the end of the line, highest specification 760, released in 1997, offered an XGA screen and received the more recently developed 166 MHz Intel Pentium MMX proccesor. A far improved model version of the original 760C. This model featured 48 MB RAM standard and a CD-ROM standard. Offered a 2.1 GB and 3.0 GB hard drive option and came pre-installed with Windows 95. The 760XD is also used on the International Space Station.[1]
Each model could be upgraded to up-to 104Mb of RAM. All of them had a Cyber9385 video card and Mwave MDSP2780 soundcard.
I have these two absolutely wonderful examples of the "Space Station" 760XD. I'm not sure of the backstory, but they're Japanese 9546 machines which have never been used. They're absolutely tip-top specification machines and they weren't cheap!
I have very delicatedly snipped out the hibernation battery from under the palmrest. It's notable that these suffer zero rot of the rubberised layer ontop of the case plastic.
They're both sporting Lithium Iron batteries and they both run a default installation of Japanese Windows 95.
I would normally disassemble and re-cap but these are unique machines which I have to find a balance between preservation and risk of damage. So besides the hibernation battery, I've left them as is.
