As you may have noticed, the L models were lower-cost alternatives to the D models. This is essentually a 'fat' XD model but with only a SVGA  and without the DSP. Instead this machine supported the more basic ESS 1688 soundcard.

As with the XD, the XL had a Pentium 166Mhz CPU, a Maximum RAM of 104MB and had CD-ROM as standard

760XL Strange Plastic Spacer

This black plastic panel often pops out from underneath the infra-red connector and above the DC board and it's hard to know where it went. If you look closely, it has 1 slot either side which slots over the back metal panel, above the external display port:

L Model ESS Sound Card

For machines with the ESS soundboard, here is what it looks like. You'll notice two surface mounted electrolytic capacitors on the left - these were very very slightly leaking on mine, so I replaced them. The MWAVE board also has these same capacitors on it, although I've not seen them as leaky, I'd change them all the same.

Boards

Here is a picture of the 760XL base board - the sound goes ontop, then DC ontop of that and finally the CPU goes on top.

Palmrest

Inside the 760's palmrest is an additional circuitboard which runs the keyboard, trackpoint, speakers, LCD as well as housing the CMOS and Hibernation battery - which needs to be removed:

Note this board has been refurbished. The four connectors often snap off because of years ingesting the fumes from the leaking hibernation battery. They often all snap off. In the board above, I have removed the hibernation battery connector in order to clean underneath it (in the gap above the 15 on the desk). Below that is a fuse and the right speaker connector. On the left, the two sockets are for the left speaker and the CMOS battery.

Along the top are ribbon connectors for all the parts of the keyboard panel that run from the board - LCD, trackpoint and two keyboard connectors.
